Firefly watching (Hotaru)

In the Japanese countryside, there is a captivating scene where an enchanting symbol shines on summer nights. That symbol is the firefly. Fireflies are beautiful creatures deeply rooted in Japan's natural environment, possessing their own unique charm. Their light creates a fantastical atmosphere, as if tiny sources of light have descended upon the earth, giving a sensation akin to being within a dream.

Fireflies, unable to survive without the pristine waters and coexistence with nature, can be observed around June each year in Higashihiroshima City.

Throughout Japanese literature and poetry, fireflies have been a longstanding presence, with poets portraying their light as a mysterious and romantic symbol. The radiance of fireflies is deeply cherished as a heartwarming sight by those who gather in forests and by rivers on summer nights. Particularly for foreigners, it serves as an excellent opportunity to experience the unique beauty of Japan's nature.

One of the allurements of fireflies lies in their ecology. Female fireflies emit light to signal their presence to male fireflies, using it to convey messages of love. Male fireflies respond by emitting light in return, expressing their feelings. This scene of flashing lights is reminiscent of stars, possessing the warmth of candlelight, evoking romantic emotions in those who behold it.

The light of fireflies on summer nights holds traditional poetic value in Japan while also resonating with modern people due to its inherent beauty. Japan's fireflies represent a marvelous fusion of nature and culture, and it is hoped that they serve as a catalyst for deepening foreigners' understanding of Japan's nature conservation and culture.
