Kintsugi experience|Japanese traditional craft

Kintsugi is one of the traditional Japanese crafts, and is a technique for repairing broken ceramics and wooden products using gold or silver powder. In addition to carefully repairing damaged areas, gold and silver powder is used to decorate the seams.

This technique expresses the idea of valuing the history and beauty of the item by emphasizing and repairing the damaged part rather than hiding the damage.

The technique of Kintsugi is very delicate and takes time and effort, but the restored work has a unique beauty and value, and the restored part stands out, giving off a new charm.

KOUGEI TSUBAKI, an atelier where even first-timers can experience Kintsugi, is located in Higashi-Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. KOUGEI TSUBAKI is a workshop and store managed by lacquer artist Maesaka, and will be a place to inherit the techniques and ideas of our predecessors and convey them to the present age based on lacquer crafts.

From simple modern Kintsugi that can be experienced in about 90 minutes, to traditional Kintsugi that takes about 3 months (total of 6 times) to make broken pottery using lacquer, etc., depending on your time and needs. It is possible to choose from four courses.

In addition to the Kintsugi experience, you can also experience making your own chopsticks using lacquer at this craft.
